Why Different Bible Translations Matter at Different Ages

 In Prayer and Scripture, Resources

Not every Bible translation is meant for every stage of life.

Just as we wouldn’t give a young child the same books we assign in high school, the Church recognizes that our encounter with Scripture deepens over time. The Word of God does not change—but our ability to receive it, understand it, and live it grows as we grow.

For that reason, different Bible translations serve different purposes. Some are especially well suited for first encounters with Scripture. Others invite deeper study, reflection, and connection to the life of the Church.

This helps place the right Bible in the hands of each reader—at just the right moment in their journey.

The Church provides guidance on which Bible translations are suitable for Catholics. In the front of the Bible, look for an imprimatur (official Church authorization) or a statement that the translation may be used by Catholics.

Beginning with Confidence

The Good News Translation—For Children and Early Readers

For younger readers, the most important question is simple: Can I understand what I’m reading?

The Good News Translation, Catholic Edition was created with this need in mind. Rather than following a strict word-for-word approach, it focuses on communicating the meaning of the biblical text in clear, natural, contemporary language.

This makes it especially effective for children and early readers. The language is approachable. The sentences flow. The message is not buried beneath unfamiliar phrasing.

At Saint Mary’s Press, we use the Good News Translation in The Catholic Children’s Bible and in Breakthrough! The Bible for Young Catholics

These Bibles are designed to help young readers encounter Scripture with confidence and understanding, laying a strong foundation for biblical literacy—the ability to understand the stories, language, and meaning of the Bible.

You might choose this translation if you are looking for:

  • Clear, accessible language
  • A Bible for younger readers
  • A translation well suited for classroom or group reading
  • A first introduction to Scripture

When a child can understand the story, the heart of the message can begin to take root.

Growing into the Life of the Church

The New American Bible, Revised Edition—For Middle School and High School

As readers mature, their relationship with Scripture begins to deepen. They are ready not only to understand the biblical stories, but also to see how those stories are proclaimed and lived within the Church.

The New American Bible, Revised Edition supports this next stage of growth.

The New American Bible, Revised Edition is closely aligned with the Scripture heard at Mass in the United States. This alignment helps readers recognize more clearly the connection between the Scripture they read personally and the Scripture they hear proclaimed in the Church.

At Saint Mary’s Press, the New American Bible, Revised Edition is offered in Breakthrough! The Bible for Young Catholics and The Catholic Youth Bible.

In middle school, students grow at different rates. Some continue to benefit from the clarity of the Good News Translation. Others are ready to begin engaging Scripture in a way that more closely reflects the language and rhythms of the Church. Offering both options allows educators and catechists to choose what best serves their group.

By high school, many young people are ready to encounter Scripture more fully within the life of the Church. The New American Bible, Revised Edition can serve as a meaningful bridge—helping students connect personal reading, classroom study, and liturgical experience in a more integrated way.

You might choose this translation if you are looking for:

  • A Bible suited for parish or classroom formation
  • A translation connected to the life of the Church
  • A bridge between personal reading and liturgical experience
  • A next step after an introductory translation

This stage of Scripture engagement is not only about understanding the text more deeply. It is also about belonging—about recognizing that the Word of God is something we share as a Church.

Deepening Understanding Through Study

The New Revised Standard Version—For High School Study & Reflection

As readers continue to grow, many begin to ask deeper questions. They explore historical context, notice patterns, and seek to understand not only what Scripture says, but how it has been interpreted and lived throughout history.

Saint Mary’s Press offers a version of The Catholic Youth Bible that uses the New Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition. This translation strives for careful accuracy while remaining readable. It reflects careful engagement with ancient manuscripts and a thoughtful balance between precision and clarity.

Together, the New American Bible, Revised Edition and the New Revised Standard Version offer two complementary approaches for high school readers:

  • The New American Bible, Revised Edition connects Scripture with the life of the Church
  • The New Revised Standard Version supports deeper academic and theological study

You might choose the New Revised Standard Version if you are:

  • Engaging in academic or theological study
  • Comparing translations
  • Working in ecumenical settings
  • Seeking deeper textual understanding

Both approaches invite a more mature encounter with the Word.

The Word for Spanish-Speaking Readers

For Spanish-speaking readers, we follow the same formation-centered approach: matching the translation to the reader’s stage of growth.

Like the Good News Translation in English, La Biblia Católica para Niños uses the Dios Habla Hoy translation which incorporates a meaning-for-meaning approach and clear, accessible language. This allows children to encounter Scripture in a way that feels immediate and understandable.

La Biblia Católica para Jóvenes uses the Biblia de América translation which retains accessibility while introducing greater depth, helping young people engage Scripture more thoughtfully within the life of the Church.

Together, these translations reflect the same pastoral vision: that every reader — at every stage — can encounter the Word of God in a way that is both understandable and transformative.

Growing with the Word

It can be tempting to think of Bible translations as competing with one another—as if one were better and the others somehow less so. But that is not how the Church understands them.

Each translation serves a purpose. Each meets the reader at a particular stage. Each opens the door to the same Word of God in a way that can be received more fully at that moment.

A child who begins with a clear and simple translation is not missing anything essential. Instead, that child is being given the gift of understanding—so that, over time, deeper layers can unfold. And as we grow, the Word continues to meet us—again and again—speaking in ways we are newly ready to hear.

Scripture remains the same. But we do not.

So what is the best Bible? It’s the one that helps us take the next step.

Coming in 2027—The Catholic American Bible

The Catholic American Bible will be released in 2027 as a new translation developed in continuity with the New American Bible Revised Edition. Guided by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, this translation is designed to bring greater clarity, consistency, and unity to how Scripture is encountered across Catholic life in the United States.

As the Catholic American Bible is gradually incorporated into liturgical and pastoral settings, it will help readers more clearly recognize the connection between the Scripture they read personally and the Scripture they hear proclaimed in the Church. By aligning more closely with the language used in the liturgy, it serves as a bridge between hearing and reading the Word of God.

Receive updates on when our offerings will be available in this new translation.

Note: Starting in 2027, the New American Bible, Revised Edition will be replaced by the Catholic American Bible.Breakthrough! The Bible for Young Catholics and The Catholic Youth Bible will both be printed in the Catholic American Bible translation, replacing the current versions printed in the New American Bible, Revised Edition translation.
