A Scripture Focused Catholic School Curriculum
Scripture is central to our Catholic religious education curriculum. Each grade level offers an area of focus, while at the same time spiraling core concepts and foundational understandings to deepen meaning:
The Kindergarten section opens up the series by introducing children to Jesus. Examples of lesson goals include recognizing that God chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus and that Jesus told stories to teach us.
Grade 1 emphasizes God as a central and key part of the Catholic faith. Examples of lesson goals include to recall that God created all things and understanding the Kingdom of Heaven as wherever God rules over people’s hearts.
Grade 2 refocuses on Jesus but with an emphasis on Jesus’ sacrifice and the Eucharist. Examples of lesson goals include understanding that Jesus died and rose for us and identifying sacraments as meetings with Jesus.
Grade 3 emphasizes the Church. Examples of lesson goals include understanding that the Church is made up of different people with different gifts and to recall that we belong to the Church.
Grade 4 relates to the Covenant and works to define the word covenant as a serious agreement between God and people. An examples of a lesson goal includes to identify each one of us as a necessary part of the Body of Christ.
Grade 5 concludes with a focus on the Sacrament. Examples of lesson goals include to review that in Baptism we promise to live as faithful Christians and to recall that Confirmation is one of the Sacraments of Christian Initiation into the Church.
As students enter Grades 1–5, The Catholic Children’s Bible becomes the core text in every lesson.

Breaking Down Our Discover! Religious Education Curriculum
Each grade level is structured in the same manner: four units, each with five chapters equaling 20 chapters per grade level. Each chapter follows a pillar of the Catechism with one chapter specifically focusing on Catholic social teaching. The unit structure for all grades is as follows:
- First chapter: Believe (first Catechism pillar)
- Second chapter: Celebrate (second Catechism pillar)
- Third chapter: Live (third Catechism pillar)
- Fourth chapter: Live: Catholic Social Teaching (third Catechism pillar / Catholic social teaching)
- Fifth chapter: Pray (fourth Catechism pillar)
In addition to the 20 core chapters, Discover! also includes:
- 8 liturgical season lessons, which can be incorporated into the flow of the year as desired to customize lessons
